DevOpsDays New York City 2019: Join the planning committee!

2019 feels like a long way off, but since the conference is in January, we need to start planning soon. The sooner we start, the less rushed the planning can be.

I have to confess that working with the 2018 committee was one of the best and most professional conference planning experiences I've ever had. I've been involved with many conferences over the years and this experience was one of the best!

I invite new people to join the committee for 2019. The best way to learn about organizing is to join a committee and help out. You will be mentored and learn a lot in the process. Nothing involved in creating a conference is difficult, it just takes time and commitment.

Interested in being on the next planning committee? An informational meeting will be held via WedEx on Tuesday, March 6 at 2pm (NYC timezone, of course!).

During this kick-off meeting, the 2018 committee will review what roles they took on, what went well, what could be improved and the timeframe for the 2019 event. Please note, attendance to this meeting doesn't commit you to help organize this event, however, it is hoped by the end that we will be able to firm up who will comprise the 2019 event committee.

Do football scholarship offers come in the month of March? If so, where are mine at?

When thinking about this question, I do have to once again repeat what I wrote in an article last week.  Out of all the months in the year, March is one of the slowest and most boring for junior football recruits.

There are a few reasons as to why this is.  Most college coaches at Division I-A level have already started peaking ahead to the upcoming classes and know who the best players are.  By the time March rolls around, in a perfect world you should already have sent your highlight tape out shortly after the season ended.  The coaches should have already evaluated this because you get things done early, right?

There are usually two camps as far as getting your highlight video done goes.  The first is the family that has followed the advice on this site and prepared for it early.  They lined everything up before the season started and when the season was over, they sent their best game tapes to be cut and included in the highlight video.  If you followed this path, then there is no doubt that you likely already got the highlight tape out to the coaches to look at prior to the month of March.

The other camp is the one that is not quite prepared for the football recruiting process.  There are coaches recruiting them but this family is the one that hasn’t put much work into recruiting.  The coaches found them and have been showing interest.  This family doesn’t start getting in gear until April or May when the college coaches tell them flat out that they want to view their highlight video.  The month of March is normally slow as coaches are preparing for the start of spring practice and extending more offers doesn’t happen all that often (if you are a family in need of a video, see www.highlight-videos.com).

I took a look back at one smaller state that I have tracked their recruiting attention over the years.  This state doesn’t produce a ton of Division I-A/BCS talent but enough that college coaches from across the country will always take a serious look at their top prospects.

The one thing I saw is that over the last two years, the majority of the scholarships extended were ones to players who already had offers on the table.  This is because coaches react differently when they know that there is another school in their area/conference that thinks this athlete is a Division I-A player.  I have stressed that scholarships breed scholarships and that is especially true in the month of May.

I also found only one case where an athlete received his first scholarship offer during the month of March.  You may be asking yourself why but that question is pretty obvious if you think about it.  College coaches normally hold Junior Days in January and February in order to bring their top recruits onto campus.  One of the main reasons that they do this is to see if the athlete passes the eyeball test.  If you are listed at 6-foot-5 and appear to be 6-foot-3, chances are strong that an offer won’t be coming your way.

These coaches use the eyeball test, your highlight video, and other research they have done about your character in order to determine if you are scholarship worthy at this point in the process.  Because most coaches have seen the film at this point, if they confirm your size (and it is big), then they may step forward with an offer.  The problem is that unless you attend their Junior Day, you will be unable to be given the eyeball test until the evaluation period begins in April.

There are occasional exceptions where an athlete will finally get his highlight video out and then coaches are impressed by it.  That does happen.  But the majority of scholarship offers for juniors in March only come when there are other offers on the table.  Follow the national recruiting sites for Rivals and Scout and you will see that both sites follow this logic.

For seniors, there may be a few major college scholarship offers for athletes who have finally qualified academically to play at that level.  Chances are very slim that a full qualifier from day one will be given an offer this late in their senior years.

As for sophomore, since very few are invited to Junior Days, it means that the coaches will have to rely on the upcoming evaluation period.  Coaches don’t offer sophomores all that frequently but when they do, they want to at least visit the high school and bump into them.  This bump will confirm their size and see if offering them would be worth it this early.

How the little things matter in the recruiting process to coaches in the battle for an athletic scholarship

I have harped for quite sometime about how college coaches do a great job narrowing down their recruiting databases and eventually finding recruits that can fit their system.  These coaches cut through the thousands of athletes to eventually get to only a small number in any sport that deserve a scholarship offer.  But what makes it difficult is when the college coaches believe that there are two athletes with very similar abilities.

I found one article recently that had another great story with a college coach may determine who ends up getting the scholarship offer.  As I talked about before, I know a Division I college basketball coach that ended up offering a small school prospect because he knew that the athlete work up every morning at 5 AM and lifted before school.  This showed the work ethic that this athlete had and helped him land a major Division I scholarship offer.

Here is a story that former Ohio State football coach Bill Conley shared with an audience recently regarding the football recruiting process for the Buckeyes.  For those that have followed college football, there is no doubt that The Ohio State has a wide recruiting base and has been able to land excellent recruiting class after excellent recruiting class.  Here is what Conley did with a tough decision about which recruit to offer.

“One year at Ohio State, we had one scholarship left for a defensive player.  We were looking at one guy from a big high school in the Pittsburgh area, one from the Cleveland area and another from a little, tiny school in western Ohio.  They were all pretty close, and we looked at a lot of tape on all of them. One night around midnight, I was watching film and I noticed something about the kid from the small school. His team was in a game that was a blow out, like 36-6, 36-7, something like that. It was late in the game, and this guy was still playing hard, even though the game was over.

After the other team had scored, he got through the line and blocked the extra point. It didn’t affect the outcome one way or another, but it impressed me how he was still playing at a high level. That’s the kid we wound up signing, and he wound up being a member of our National Championship team,” he said.

The article didn’t specify if the player that they were they were recruiting ended up doing anything positive for the Buckeyes.  But here is a small school athlete who kept working and was always battling.  It didn’t matter the school.  He still wanted to do whatever he could to help his team win.

This is why college coaches request full game tape.  Any football recruit can make themselves look outstanding in the highlights.  The question they are looking for is what is the athlete doing if the ball is not coming their way?  Are they just jogging through the route and not taking it very serious?  As small as this is, it really can determine if State University ends up offering you a scholarship.  The smallest things make the biggest differences in the recruiting process.

Keep this article into consideration before your next high school season.  Could a little play I take off at the end of the game be the different between a scholarship offer and walking on?

As my wife can attest to, I enjoy setting goals and writing them down on paper. I think it allows me to focus on a number of different things that I need to do and keeps me on task as well. My lists of goals on a regular basis didn’t start until after I was graduated from college and I was working full time.
But goals can be used everywhere, including throughout the athletic recruiting process. When I talk about these goals, I am going to leave playing ability in your sport of choice out of the question. The reason is because it is obvious that you will have to put in a ton of time to play at any college so that should be a given. But for helping yourself in the recruiting process, goals are crucial.
My recommendation for athletes is to focus more on the short term goals. Yes, you can have long term goals of playing college athletics but it is tough because everyone wants to write down the Division I goal. The problem is if you do that, will that sway you into having Division I eyes and not looking at any other college options? So short term goals it is!
As an athlete who has logged varsity minutes and wants to get started with goals, think about some short term things that you can do. Here are six goals that I feel are vital to help yourself throughout the athletic recruiting process:
1.) Put together a recruiting profile
2.) Research schools in your state/surrounding states
3.) Send introductory emails to the college coaches that have what you are looking for athletically and academically
4.) Keep a list/build a database to track the coaches that you have contacted
5.) Put together a highlight video/hudl video
For the most part, these really are things that I seemingly talk about all the time. The reason is that they are methods that have worked in the past and will continue to work into the future as well. If you haven’t done these, then what are you waiting for?
There are two keys to maintaining the goals that you set for yourself. The first is to write it down. If you think about it internally and that is all, then what will it matter if you never end up doing it? That is why writing it down is so essential throughout the athletic recruiting process.
The second is after you write your goals down, you need to get started on them within 48 hours afterwards. So if you would have written down your goals today at noon, then by Wednesday at noon, you will have needed to do something about them. I am not just talking about looking into how you should make a recruiting profile. I am talking about taking the steps needed to either get the job done or have it nearly finished.
After you finish that goal, then you should take the time to move on to the next goal. For these six, these honestly should be done in order. That will allow you to move on to the next and keep progressing with these steps. Also, if you are unhappy with the lack of responses from the schools (after multiple attempts), then start researching the schools again and find more programs to look into.
Also, try to involve your entire family in this so that there is more than just one person helping you to achieve these goals. Your parents or a sibling may be willing to help you achieve your long term goal of playing college athletics. But first, there will be a lot of short term goals that must be achieved.

More than one athlete on a team can play at the college level and why the better the team, the better for recruiting overall

A few weeks back I got an email from an athlete talking about a teammate. His teammate has much better college potential because of his size along the offensive line and college coaches have taken notice of that. What this teammate did, in my mind, was very questionable.
He basically just emailed me destroying the teammate and his abilities. He hyped himself up in the process but the overlying theme that I got out of the emails was his lack of respect for his teammate. And for the record, his teammate is getting early Division I attention at this point. I don’t know if there is jealousy involved or what but it didn’t sit well with me.
The last thing an athlete should do is basically throw a teammate under the bus. I don’t care how much you hate him or don’t respect his skills/work ethic in your sport. It just should not happen and it makes me question in a huge way the overall attitude of this athlete.
What this player needs to realize is that just because he has a teammate who is going to be playing in college and is a football recruit, it won’t be stopping him from following the same path if he has the skills. If anything, having a recruited teammate may actually be a benefit to both parties involved.
When the evaluation period starts and say State University comes in to talk about Recruit A, their high school coach may talk about Recruit B and his abilities as well. The coach will likely call both of them down to “bump” into the college coach and just say hello. This gives him a chance to potentially pass the eyeball test.
Chances are that if you have two or more recruits on your team, that you are going to win more games than a school that has zero recruits (this does depend but it normally the case). The more games you win, the better chance you have to play in front of college coaches deep in the playoffs. And the more success you have, the better your chances for potentially being named All Conference and All State. These honors are not needed to get a Division I offer but they certainly help matters.
Two recruits can also help reduce travel expenses. I know that there are some families that have emailed me about saving money during the recruiting process. One great way is to have a teammate or someone in your area who you befriend. When there are Junior Days or unofficial visit, you can bum a ride from them instead of having to fit the travel bill all yourself.
If you don’t know any of the other players at the visit, having a teammate there will certainly make things more comfortable. That is at least until you meet some other people there. So really, it is important to realize that having another teammate being recruited can be a good thing. If a school has enough talent, scholarships will be extended often.

I’m a junior basketball recruit. What should I be doing now in March to help aid in the basketball recruiting process?

One of the features that I hope to do monthly is to focus on what I feel recruits in football, basketball, and possibly other sports should be doing right now to help themselves in the recruiting. As I have said many times, this is a difficult journey and most families are intimidated by it. But if you focus on what you need to do, it can help you work towards that scholarship.

This look will focus on what you need to do to help yourself hopefully earn a scholarship down the road or open doors to college that you were previously not considering. While many people still think that if you are good enough, schools will find you. The problem is that the schools that may eventually find you (If they do at all) will be unable to give you any scholarship money. You will be found but your student loan bills will haunt you for quite sometime (Which I can attest to).

If you have not figured it out already, the main area that you need to be focused on is finding an AAU team. If you really think that you are a scholarship player at the college level (I am talking Division I or II), you need to play for an AAU team. This is very essential because the exposure you get while on the AAU circuit is something that you can get nowhere else. College coaches from around the country will be traveling to a variety of tournaments. While they may not have set out to watch you, it is a good chance to showcase your skills in front of these coaches.

A big problem now is that most AAU teams have already started their practices and some have gotten tournaments in already. If you are not on an AAU team, your best bet is to try and figure out what the best teams are in your around (Include your state and bordering states in your search). Contact their coaches and talk to them about how many people they have on their team, if there are any other open spots, or if you can be an alternative. With so many things happening during the spring and summer for high school athletes, there are always spots where you can be an alternative (Most kids miss action for prom).

One of the interesting things when comparing the basketball recruiting process and the football recruiting process is the use of highlight videos. If you have a great highlight video in football, you could easily get a scholarship offer without being seen by the coaches. Chances are slim that this will happen in hoops. While making a highlight video can help you in recruiting for basketball, it is by no means an immediate path to a scholarship.

College basketball coaches feel that anyone can loop together five minutes of their top plays on the basketball court. Because games are so high scoring, it is easy to do that. The coaches want to see basketball players against other top players throughout the country. They want to know if the athlete can defend? How is his demeanor towards coaches and other players? Does he make those around him better? If you are in the recruiting process, a highlight tape can help. But coaches will rely much more heavily on full game tapes and seeing the player in action for themselves.

If you have not done so already, I would recommend going through the first few steps in the Five Steps to a Scholarship series (CLICK HERE FOR THAT ARTICLE). You do want to put together a profile, find schools that match you, and then market yourself to those schools. As mentioned above, it would help to put together a website and a highlight video but is not as important if you play for an AAU team that travels the country.

Depending on your area and your ability, contact local college coaches and see if you can play open gyms with them. With it being the spring, many of the athletes may be away with work or class obligations. This gives you a chance to see what the college game is about. Even if it is Division III basketball, it is good to try to go against bigger and better competition. This will definitely help you in the long run.

And if your schedule can fit it, I would recommend going out for track. It is good for all athletes to go out for track as it helps with your speed and endurance. If you are interested, talk to the track coaches about just practicing and helping whenever you can. They need to know that basketball comes first but if you are a good kid, they will probably let you go out.

Another area to look into is the elite camps that basketball coaches hold. No, I am not talking about the week overnight at State University. The chances of you getting a scholarship through that are very, very small. I am talking about the elite camps that coaches hold for a day or two with a very small price tag. This can definitely help you with the recruiting process just because so many different coaches are in attendance.
